Lower Back Pain Q&A

Why do I have lower back pain?

There are many possible causes of lower back pain:

Sprain or strain:
You can sprain or strain the soft tissue in your body (ligaments, tendons, and muscles) just by twisting or lifting the wrong way, poor posture, work ergonomics, sleep position, and overusing your lower back muscles. Most strain and sprains happen during normal activity, but it takes treatment to fully resolve so it doesn't happen again.

Impact injuries:
Whether you’ve suffered an impact injury due to a fall, contact sports, or an auto accident, you could be experiencing pain from compression or misalignment of your hips, pelvis, or spine.

Slipped disc or spinal stenosis:
Sometimes lower back pain comes from pressure on nerves. This can happen if you have a herniated or slipped disc. Spinal stenosis, which causes your spinal canal to become narrow, can also affect your spinal cord and cause lower back pain. These conditions should be evaluated and diagnosed as soon as possible to get you the best results.

Osteoarthritis:
Your lower back pain could be caused by osteoarthritis, which causes your joints to stiffen, creating tension in your back. Osteoarthritis in your hips or legs can also lead to lower back pain. It can cause poor posture or a bad gait as you walk, and lead to pain in your lower back.

How is lower back pain treated?

Men, women, and children have improvements with lower back pain by restoring motion to the spine through a chiropractic adjustment. During an adjustment, Dr. Payne will gently realign your spinal joints and extremities. This repositioning feels good and will ease tension and take pressure off nerves, to decrease pain and promote stability.

If you’re in a lot of pain or have severe swelling, Dr. Payne can use specialized tools for your comfort to decrease your immediate pain. Your treatment plan will also likely consist of soft tissue therapies to treat injuries to your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Stretching, electric stimulation therapy, and massage therapy are just some of the soft tissue treatments that can help you with lower back pain.

Will I need several sessions?

Most likely. Because chiropractic care involves correcting problems so your body will heal itself, each case has unique parameters in order to get you the specific results you want. Dr. Payne and staff are honest and upfront about what it will take to correct your problem.

Once your pain is gone, you will probably decide to continue being adjusted on a maintenance basis to keep your spine in optimum health. Just like working out or eating healthy works best if you are consistent, chiropractic care is wonderful at keeping people feeling their best.
